Lighting used for fluorescence applications (e.g., microscopy) must be impressive down to the finest detail. Clinics and research laboratories want to get more work done in less time. For them intensity is essential in the most demanding applications. High power light sources covering a broad, continuous spectrum from the near-UV to the far-red perfectly meet these requirements.

Fluorescence microscopy and other visual inspection applications are extremely light-hungry. In a typical research-grade microscope, throughput loss of the illumination system often exceeds much more than 80% of the provided input power, depending on the number of filters, mirrors, prisms and lenses in the optical path.

Historically, mercury arc discharge lamps offered the best performance for fluorescence applications. It is only logical, that fluorophores have been developed, matching the spectral peaks of those lamps in an ideal way. This smoothed the way for broad acceptance of off-peak excitation and fiber coupled metal halide light sources were very well received in the market, as excitation intensity could significantly be improved for dyes that have absorption bands falling in the spectral regions between the mercury lines.
